3 Reasons Why Your Maine Coon Needs a Cat Bed
1. Cat Beds Give a Sense of Security
Cat beds are a source of security and familiarity to your Maine Coon, regardless of if they sleep there all the time. My Maine Coon moves his bedding arrangements often between my bed and his bed(s) in the house.
Cats seek routine and rely heavily on territory for security and well-being. Cats use smell and chemical information to make sense of their living space and territory to maximize their feelings of safety.
Cats process chemical information through a highly adapted vomeronasal organ to decipher information about other animals’ scents and to define their own core living areas and boundaries.
Giving your MCs a place of their own enhances their well-being, reduces environmental stress, and improves their mental (and thus physical) health. If your MC has a bed that smells of himself, you can use the bed to provide a sense of security if you travel or move house.
You can also use cat beds to introduce new cats to each other before the physical meeting to familiarize the cats with each other’s scent.
2. Cat Beds Give an Outlet to Your Maine Coons Instincts
Although acts are fearsome predators to smaller animals, cats still carry a deep-grained evolutionary response to predation. Our domestic cat’s ancestor, the African wildcat, was similarly small and lived and hunted alone.
Thus the evolutionary drive to find a covered or secluded sleeping spot is a deep-grained instinct in your Maine Coon whose ancestors often fell prey to larger carnivores in their environment. Although you may not have a physical threat in your home, your Maine Coon will still have the instinct to seek protected sleeping areas.
3. Cat Beds Keep Your Maine Coon From Other Less Suitable Places
You’ve all been there—finding your Maine coon in your cupboard, nice and furry on your clean clothes (or underwear!) Or on top of your home office desk with all your pens and papers on the floor underneath your desk. Or they are snuggled on your laptop or kitchen counter.
Cat beds in the perfect place can keep your cat from underfoot or knocking about on unsuitable surfaces. Some of the time, at least!
How to Choose the Best Cat Bed?
Maine Coon Size: How to Measure Your Cat Bed
It’s no surprise that your Maine Coon needs an XL cat bed, as they are considered the gentle giants of the cat world. Maine Coons range from 19-32” in length compared to an average domestic cat of 18”, so you can see you need to do your homework when finding a suitable-sized bed for your MC!
I have domestic short hair and a Maine Coon, and there is nothing funnier than watching Halo trying to sleep in my tiny Willow’s bed. Half of him hangs out on the floor!
It’s easy to measure out your cat bed size by doing these steps:
- If your Maine Coon loves to curl up, Measure your Maine Coon from the top of his head to the base of his tail and add an inch or two for wiggle room.
- If your Maine Coon loves to stretch out, I took a tape measure and measured his body when he was napping across my hallway floor. Take note, be stealthy, and use a soft measuring tape. I tried the metal type one, and it was far too intriguing for my kitty not to get up and investigate!
Which Materials to Choose for a Cat Bed
- Sheep Wool: A more expensive cat material option but contains substances that can deter bacteria and pathogen growth. This material may not be an excellent option for Maine Coons, who wool suck (see above)
- Cotton: Breathable and cool, cotton is easy to clean and free from dander and fur. Be sure to get a proper thread count, though, as looser weaves are not durable.
- Fleece: A synthetic fiber made from polyester, fleece is soft and durable and can resemble lamb wool.
- Microsuede: Microsuede is usually a better budget option than natural wool, and cats love it! The tight weave makes it durable and hard to pick apart but expect a struggle to keep it clear from your Maine coon’s shaggy fur as it is a fur magnet!
- Faux fur: Super comfy, but faux fur is under debate due to its environmental impact and biodegradability. Some concerns come from fibers detaching in wool-sucking MCs.
- Sherpa: This material is soft and silky, comes from synthetic yarns like polyester, and is a very comfy curly piled fabric.
Types of Maine Coon Cat Beds
Maine Coons love to sleep in weird and wonderful poses, as you can see here:
The trick is to find the bed that best suits your kitty’s favorite pose. Here are some options for you to consider.
Cat Caves
If your Maine Coon is a little shy and you often find her curled in your closet (on your clean clothes!) or almost invisible in a tight space—a cave cat bed is a fantastic option. Cats who seek covered, out-of-the-way spaces to sleep often seek the protection of an enclosed area to relax their vigilance when they sleep.
Cat caves are typically enclosed beds with one opening where your Maine Coon can feel the safety of the walls above and around them and only one opening to guard. These caves come in a variety of styles, such as the following:
- Pod Beds: These beds look like little alien spaceships and are solid-bodied, pod-shaped, enclosed cat sleeping areas with all manner of peepholes and materials
- Teepee Beds: Uber-cute little teepees for cats who like enclosed spaces
- Slipper Beds: look like supersize slippers for Maine Coons who like to burrow
Pad Beds
M Maine Coon, Halo, loves to spread his massive body across doorways and any high-traffic area. He seems to enjoy our clambering over his bulk as he watches us with sleepy, amused eyes! Cats who like to spread out in the open are “desert cats” who love to stretch out wide in areas where they will surely be in the middle of the action!
Pad beds are larger, square mats with foam or stuffing or memory foam materials that allow your Maine Coon to have a king-size stretch.
Orthopedic Cat Beds
Orthopedic beds suit senior or health-compromised Maine Coons, and they offer a supportive base for your cat. They are typically filled with slightly firmer materials than the usual plush bed and can come in various forms. The unifying factor is the specially designed materials that support spines and joints for a peaceful and healing rest.
Self-Warming Cat Beds
Maine Coons usually don’t need extra warming every day. MCs evolved to cope with coastal Maine freeze, adapting their shaggy coats and furry britches as self-warming apparatus. Plus, their XXL, super-furry tails are like a cat duvet, which they wrap around their bodies for an extra layer of warmth.
However, a self-warming cat bed may be a good choice if you live in a colder climate and your kitty hogs YOUR duvet in winter. Self-warming beds contain materials that absorb and reflect heat to your kitty for a toasty snooze when it’s cold out.
Window Perch Bed
Cats love to window watch, especially when you keep them indoors. They can watch for kitty intruders or chirrup at tasty birds outside. Generally, these beds are either elevated or secured onto a window so your cat can spy on the outside world. With the XL size of the Maine Coon it’s best to ensure your window perch bed can easily hold their weight.
Cat Condos
Cat condos are usually square enclosed areas elevated on a structure with other enclosures, scratching posts, etc. Maine Coons who love to climb or tree-dweller types who like to sleep in elevated areas such as cabinets and counters tend to gravitate towards cat condo-style sleeping areas.
Furniture Type Beds
Furniture-style beds compromise between kitty sleeping needs and modern style in homes where aesthetics are essential. These beds come in all shapes and forms, such as vintage TVs or miniature wooden beds like little human furniture. These gorgeous offerings usually come with a heftier price tag, like stylish objects are.

FAQs About Maine Coon Beds
Why Do Maine Coons Need Cat Beds?
Cats thrive on personal space and territory, making them feel more secure. Cat beds offer a warm sanctuary for your cat to feel protected when they sleep, which is a cat’s instinctual urge. Our domestic cat’s ancestors were small predators and thus also prey to larger carnivores, so seeking a secure spot is an outlet for their instincts.
Why Won’t My Maine Coon Sleep in His Cat Bed?
Cats aren’t the best at accepting novel items. The best way to lure your cat onto the bed is to place catnip or treats on the source to encourage your cat to try the product. Some cats prefer cave-like beds, and some prefer open beds, so you should observe your MC’s favorite sleeping spaces before you buy a bed.
Should Cats Have Separate Beds?
Cats should have a separate living area with their own water, litter tray, toys, and sleeping area. Cats come from solitary ancestors, and sharing space with another cat may cause stress. Allocating each cat to an individual bed will eliminate territorial issues between your kitties and make each cat feel more secure and content.
